4X03 - What was Lost, Part 2: Resurrection

Creature: You're with Grayza. You'll give her the Darnaz probes.
J: Look, Grayza doesn't give a rat's ass...

D: Well, to use one of your expressions, you're going to have to take one for the team.
J: Technically, I've already taken two.
D'Argo is really into the baseball metaphors. For someone who never heard of Earth, much less the game of baseball, he's really picked those up!

J: I do not get back in the saddle with Mata Hari until I get the whole plane!
Mata Hari was a famous spy for Germany from World War I. She seduced men to gain access to secret information.

Grayza: I let you walk unguarded and you repay me by trying to escape?
J: I'm not Steve McQueen; I wasn't trying to escape.
This is a reference to the movie "The Great Escape" starring Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, and James Coburn. Thanks for site fans who wrote in to say that this could also be a reference to the film "Papillon" where McQueen plays an inmate of the infamous Devil's Island penal colony.

Braca informs Grayza of D'Argo's plan
J:Bad news from Smithers?
Smithers is Mr. Burns' assistant and all around chief butt-kisser on "The Simpsons."

John is digging a grave on Grayza's orders
J: Is that enough dirt out of your hole, Boss?
Another movie reference, this time to "Cool Hand Luke" starring Paul Newman. John has referenced this move before, in the season 1 episode Nerve. I apologize to and thank all the site fans who wrote in to correct my mistake regarding this reference. I originally said Steve McQueen was in this movie. I can only plead exhaustion as it was after midnight when I posted these.

To Grayza
J: Couldn't do it the old-fashioned way, could you? Six pack of beer, a night of bowling, skinny-dipping...Unh unh. I hear you've been putting some junk on the ball, a little monkey, a little Gaylord Perry, a little Joe Niekro
There's quite a bit here:

  • Skinny-dipping is going swimming naked
  • "a little monkey", I think refers to monkey business which means getting into mischief or doing something dishonest.
  • "putting junk on the ball" refers to baseball pitchers doctoring the ball with a foreign substance such as spit to make it harder to hit properly. Doctoring of the ball was outlawed in 1920.
  • Gaylord Perry was a Major League Baseball pitcher for over 20 years beginning in the early 1960's. He won the Cy Young Award in 1970. He was also well known for doctoring the ball.
  • Joe Niekro was also a Major League Baseball pitcher; his moment of infamy came during a nationally televised game where he was caught using a nail file to rough up the ball.
  • Thanks to the multitude of site fans who emailed to fill us in on who Joe Niekro is. Neither of us are really into baseball so it was a huge help to have you guys send in the facts.

To the faulty pulse pistol
J: You are the most powerful handgun in the Uncharted Territories, and I don't know if you've fired 500 shots or 600 shots...
John is riffing on the famous speech from "Dirty Harry".
