4X07 - John Quixote

Thanks to a site fan who wrote into remind me of the reference in this ep's title, John Quixote, like Don Quixote. She pointed out that Chiana was like Pancho, and the castle, elevator, and various demons and gatekeepers represented tilting at windmills. And then finally, it was all in John's mind, just as it was in the Don's.

C: Crichton?
J: What?
C: You're doing it again.
J: What?
C: Zoning.
This is most likely a slang term that John has clued Chiana in on....zoning is spacing out or daydreaming.

J: (the host John in the game) Your mission should you choose to accept it...journey to the source of evil - discover the darkness. Earp.
"Your mission, should you choose to accept it" is from the TV series Mission Impossible and the movies starring Tom Cruise. I'm not sure on the rest of it. Oh and Earp, is what Aeryn first called John's home planet in the series premiere.

J: Those look like chocolate coins.

Zhaan: (in the game) He's going south.
"Going south" is slang for an illness getting worse

To Chiana after Zhaan drives away
J: Zhaan.
C: Yeah.
J: Oh, the horror.
C: ( nodding ) The new and improved Zhaan.
We had someone write in and tell us that "Oh! The Horror, the horror" are Kurtz's famous last words from the novel Heart of Darkness, which I suppose goes along with some of the other Heart of Darkness-y things this season.

C: (in the game) Hey, Gretel. Do you think they're here to eat?
Hansel and Gretel is a fairy tale. If remember right Hansel and Gretel stumbled upon an old woman in the forest and she kidnapped them and fattened them up to eat them. John's version in the game was a bit twisted, because it seemed to me that D'Argo was Gretel and was only eating to fatten himself up.

D: Crichton, where are you?
J: Just trying to get home, Auntie Em.
Another reference to The Wizard of Oz.

J: We will be there ASAP.
ASAP - as soon as possible.

Avatar Stark: Mind the gap.
"Mind the gap" is the warning you hear when entering or exiting the cars on the London Underground as there is a small gap between the edge of the platform and the car itself.

J: (the host John in the game) That's a nice sword you've got. Ever slay any dragons with it. You should give it a name like Cameron, Uma...Uma...Uma.
John loves Cameron Diaz...he's mentioned her before in the Look at the Princess trilogy. Uma is Uma Thurman another blonde beauty.

J: When I take him down you're going to have to find a way to hog tie everybody.
C: So you're going to draw Scorpius into the game.

S: Really, John, you expect to hold me this way.
J: (pulls out a banana instead of his pulse pistol followed by funny cartoon sounds)

C: Let's screw the pooch.
This is ground well covered and is the catch phrase for season four. Now everyone says this...not just John.

A: (as the Princess in the game and with a lisp) Oh, good. I can see who wears the pants in your family.
"Wearing the pants" is a slang term for who takes control in a relationship. It obviously refers to the male, because men wear pants and women used to be relegated to dresses. Now if a woman has control in her marriage/relationship...people will say she wears the pants in her family.

Stark: Maybe you have to do more than kiss the princess. Maybe you have to show the princess a really good time.
Ummm...I'm not going to go there...not yet.

N: You carry a weapon.
J: Second amendment.
The second amendment of the United States Constitution gives citizens the right to bear arms.

Now here's my personal observations. There were a lot of fairy tales, movies and a Farscape eps used in this episode. There were illusions to them, and every person could watch this one and see something different. Here's the references I saw:

Mario, the video game - the tower at the beginning of the show looked like something from a game and certainly the goal of finding and kissing the princess was one of the original goals in completing Donkey Kong. I haven't played video games in over 10 years, so I don't know if it still is.

Max Headroom - When John (and later Stark) appears in the tv monitor, he's dressed like and talks like Max Headroom. Max Headroom was a tv show in the mid-80's.

Camelot - John goes into a good bit of King Arthur.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail: the bit about Rygel not letting anyone pass, and John's speech is straight from the movie.

Hansel and Gretel - another fairy tale, played out by D'Argo, Jool and Chi.

Rupunzel - maybe, Aeryn's hair was blonde and long.

The Way We Weren't - (Farscape ep) where John and Aeryn drop from an access shaft into Pilot's chamber and a DRD shoots at them.

Star Trek: TNG, eXistenZ, X-Files - these are three I can think off right off the bat where someone is stuck in a hologram a game or an alternate reality and they think they are out, but they aren't really.

Gone With the Wind - Aeryn's southern accent and very damsel in distress behavior.

City of Angels - a movie with Nicolas Cage, when John jumped off the ledge, it was very much like Cage's jump in the movie.

Microsoft Windows - I thought of this one and then didn't put it in, because I thought it was TOO far fetched, but then a really smart and intuitive site fan ;-) wrote in and said she noticed it too. So there you go.
