4X05 - Promises

J: Asylum? What is it with Peacekeepers. First they hunt us, then they want to move in. Are we a bed and breakfast. Do we have a sign outside that says "Free HBO?"
A bed and breakfast is a quaint little house or small hotel, known for their outstanding service and making the guest feel right at home. HBO stands for Home Box Office, a pay cable channel that shows movies and original series like The Sopranos, Sex And The City and Six Feet Under.

D: Oh, so you're here to be John's protector. I don't believe it.
J: Kryptonite, silver bullet, Buffy - what's it going to take to keep you in the grave?
OK there's a few here:

  • Kryptonite is the substance that can kill Superman
  • A silver bullet is known to kill werewolves, possibly vampires and other assorted demons.
  • Buffy is a reference to the television show, Buffy: The Vampire Slayer. Buffy is a girl possessed of strong powers whose calling it is to rid the world of vampires.

Again, the writers of Farscape get kudos from Alex and I for mentioning Buffy....as it's our other favorite television show.

J: What would you have me do? Whack him straight away.
Harvey: Without hesitation.
"Whack him" is slang for killing someone...."straight away" is more or less slang for doing something quickly.

J: Would have arranged for a fruit basket, but we didn't know you were coming.
John's heart just isn't in welcoming Scorpy....

A: This is not how I pictured coming back.
J: It's just fate. As usual keeping it's bargain and screwing us in the fine print. So how did you catch this cold. Dancing....barefoot in the park.
In Dog With Two Bones, John and Aeryn left their lives up to fate. The "fine print" is a legal document contains all the small details in a contract, and it is usually those small details that come back to bite you in the ass....but I'm not bitter. Barefoot in the Park is a movie starring Robert Redford and Jane Fonda.

J: Knock, knock, knock. Candy-gram.
A candy-gram is another Mel Brooks reference. Thanks to everyone who wrote in about this. This references is from Blazing Saddles when Sheriff Bart of Rock Ridge sends Mongo a Candygram. He walks in with a bellman-like suit and says: "Candygram for Mongo." Candygram was also a running gag in the Landshark skit on "Saturday Night Live".

Ullom: You risk you lives for this antidote.
J: Cute. Hologram. And we wanted a face-to-face.
Another, though veiled, reference to Star Trek. Holograms and holodecks were quite common in ST: The Next Generation and the following series (except Enterprise). Hologram technology combines transporter, replicator, and holographic systems. The programs, projected via emitters create both "solid" props and characters as well as holographic background to evoke any vista, any scenario, and any personality — all based on whatever real or fictional parameters are programmed. I've got an order in for my Lake Powell hologram. :-)

Ullom: But I must know who hired them. My people are ready to go to war over this.
J: You need to know who paid for the hit. We don't have a problem with that.
A hit is slang for putting out a contract on someone's life to kill them.

J: When did you become an assassin?
A: When I found a cause that required it.
J: So tell me about it. Tell me the Prime Hokothian is the devil incarnate. Tell me you did the universe a favor.
To be the incarnate of something is to be personified in human form....in other words, leader of Hokothia was the devil.

Harvey: John you've got to stay away from Scorpius.
J: I'm just gonna pick his brain.
To "pick someone's brain" is to find out everything they know about something.

Harvey: How could I leave your mind. It's full of so many wonderous memories. Smooth jazz piano, chocolate ice cream, women's perfume.....women. How could you take that from me?
J: You're not real.
Harvey: I'm real to you and I'm real to myself.
Not really a Crichtonism as John didn't say this, Harvey did. But I just feel so bad for John.....he misses ice cream.

J: Pilot, get me Ullom on the horn.
To get someone on the horn is slang for getting someone on the phone...or the communicator as the case may be.

Ullom: What's the point. This place is sealed. You're trapped and outnumbered.
J: Yea, you got anymore warm bodies...trot 'em on out. Or get your own ass down here, if you've got the nads for it.
"Nads" is short for "gonads". John is asking Ullom to come out if he has the "balls" for it.

D: I'll take Aeryn to the pod
J: Right. (to Sikozu) You stay here. (to D'Argo) Keep the motor running.
"....get out on the highway. Looking for adventure, or whatever comes our way." The song is "Born To Be Wild" by Steppenwolf. Thanks to everyone who wrote in about this one as well. And as is the way with Crichtonisms, someone others have written in to point out that "keep the motor running" is what you'd say to a taxi cab driver or a friend to let them know to keep the car running, that you won't be long or to be prepared for a speedy getaway. I've put both opinions up...you pick which you like best.

(Ullom breathes)
J: You're still with us, Holly.
Holly, a nickname for Hologram, which Ullom is so fond of. Holly is also a reference to the computer in the Red Dwarf series. The computer appeared as a hologram. Thanks to a site fan who wrote in.
