4X06 - Natural Election

J: Wormhole in dies, nueve, ocho, siete, seis, cinco, quatro, tres, dos, uno...
John's timing may be off, but his flair for the dramatic is well-honed. Also, have you notice how much Spanish John has been throwing into his speech since Sikozu arrived? I wonder if he's doing it just to throw her off.

J: Tear off page 42
I didn't add this one in originally because I really didn't think John was referring to anything in particular, just picking a number out of the air. However, I decided to add it in due to an email from a site fan and the idea that it was probably one of the writers throwing in a funny little in-joke. For anyone familiar with "The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy" trilogy, there's no need to explain the significance of the number 42. For the rest of you, you must go out and read these fantastic books by Douglas Adams. Okay, okay, I'll explain. Part of the trilogy deals with the search for the answer to the ultimate question of Life, the Universe, and Everything. The answer is, of course, 42. Confused? You most definitely must go read the books.

Aeryn asks John if they can talk
J: I'd offer to buy you a drink, but... (he looks down at her belly)
Alcohol can damage an unborn baby. John is referring to the pregnancy.

R: There is a chain of command
J: Whatever Sparky, rock on
"Hey kids, rock and roll." "Rock On" by David Essex. Thanks to everone who wrote in to give me the scoop.

J: Pilote, como estas hombre?
P: Commander, are you all right?
J: A little south of that

  • John's first sentence is roughly, "Pilot, how are you man?"
  • When something goes "south," it means that the situation has gotten bad. Similar to "down the tubes," "to hell," or "downhill."

John and D'Argo checking out the plant stuck to Moya's hull
J: I guess Glinda was right. We got some kind of weird plant, man.
John refers to Noranti as Glinda who was the good witch in "The Wizard of Oz." The second line, about the "weird plant" is a line from "Little Shop of Horrors." Originally a stage play and made into a movie twice (the latest in 1986 starring Rick Moranis), "Little Shop of Horrors" is about a man-eating plant.

D: This stuff is killing my eyes. How come it's not killing your eyes?
J: It's like an onion. We'll live.
I hate chopping onions. My eyes always tear up something awful. However, I don't think John's comparing the gas to an onion was really that helpful. After all, I doubt anyone knows what an onion is.

Reporting back to Pilot, untruthfully, on how bad the plant has taken over Moya
J: Pilot, it's nothing we can't handle. We'll get back to you later on the details. John flips a switch And we are off the air.
Parasitic plant infests Moya. Details at 11

D: See plant, kill plant
J: That's got to be on the Luxan coat of arms.
A coat of arms is an emblem which contains the symbol and motto of a family or clan, usually emblazoned on a shield.

J: Any news from the candy kitchen?
Frankly, I wouldn't touch any food coming out of that kitchen as long as Noranti was in charge of the menu.

S (to John): Watch
Scorpius reaches toward a part of the plant and it starts to shriek
J: Seems that Audrey has taste
Audrey is the name of the man-eating plant in "Little Shop of Horrors."

John & Aeryn are headed into the ventilation system
J: Pilot, are we gonna be okay in there?
P: Tiering fan filters in the atmospheric scrubber allows a dampening of air flow.
J: Yeah, it's all very PBS. We'll take that as an affirmative.
PBS stands for Public Broadcasting System here in the US. PBS is comprised of non-commercial television stations across the country that show a wide variety of educational programming.

J: This'll work unless that plant can mutate in 5 minutes. What could go wrong? They hear something breaking Damn, I did not just say that!
The huge fans suddenly crack and fall to pieces knocking over the pot of coolant liquid
J: Guys, we got a problem. The witch's brew is down the drain.
I hope we've all learned an object lesson here. Never, under any circumstances, never say "What could go wrong?" or "At least it can't get any worse" or "Nothing can stop us now" because I guarantee you that as soon as you do, something will go wrong or the situation will get worse than you could imagine or someone will stop you.

Chiana is spreading some goop on John's face
J: So, one million SPF... you sure this is gonna work?
C: Nope. But Aeryn said it would. Something about you wanting to have more babies?
This is the second mention of SPF; John mentions it in "Thanks For Sharing" when Jool is trying to take a DNA sample from him.

J: Ryg, be ready for my signal. If we ignite the purple haze too soon, the radiation won't penetrate Moya.
Purple Haze is a song by Jimi Hendrix

J: All DRDs stand by. Rygel, batter up!
Boy do they need a home run now
