2x01 - Mind the Baby

D'Argo is still unconscious after having been in space--
J: D'Argo, shake it off. Come on, Rock, get off the canvas. You can do it. Rise and shine, up and at 'em. Break through.
This is from the movie Rocky, when Mickey is trying to Rocky up off the mat after being knocked on his butt.

D: Where's Aeryn?
J: She's in the prowler grocery shopping.
Apparently her mini-van was in the shop.

D: As John once said, "I would rather go down on a swing."
J (gives D'Argo an odd look): Swinging. You want to go down swinging.
D: Swinging
See the note on "Family Ties"

John and D'Argo are passing the time playing Rock, Paper, Scissors.
J: Again? One, two, three
John has paper, D'Argo has rock
D(laughing): Ha, again I win.
J: No, I win. Paper wraps rock.
D: Paper cannot possibly beat rock.
J: It does, paper beats rock.
D: Rock rips through paper.
J: D'Argo, that's not how it works. Paper beats rock.
D: That is unrealistic.
J: That's the rules, and it's not supposed to be realistic. It's supposed to be entertaining.
D: My coma was more entertaining.
J: It's a kids' game.
John is nothing if not persistent, but D'Argo's just not getting it. Interesting to note here that D'Argo seems to understand the nature of paper. In the Premiere, John asks for paper so he can calculate the trajectory for Moya to try the slingshot manuever. No one seems to understand. Either they've learned what paper is, or at the time, they were just confused as to why he was asking for paper at a time like that.

J: How many times have we saved each others' lives?
A: I've lost count.
J: Safe to say more than once?
A: Sure
J: And how many times have you and I been close?
Aeryn looks quickly over at D'Argo and then back at John.
A (looking a bit embarassed): Just the once.
J (realizing she misunderstood, whispering): No, no, no, no, not that kind of close.
A: Oh, friend close.
This is just a priceless conversation and one of the funniest bits of miscommunication we've ever seen (and we've seen a lot).

D'Argo "tongues" Aeryn unconscious.
D: You look after her while I go break Crais's neck.
J: D'Argo, you couldn't break wind right now.
Breaking wind is slang for flatulance. You look it up.

To Crais, aboard Talyn--
J: I was in the neighborhood, thought I'd drop in, say hi...Hi.

J: Do Sebaceans have a word for chutzpah?
Chutzpah is aggressive boldness or unmitigated effrontery, see also "moxie" and "ballsy." (definition courtesy Dictionary.com)

C: I want to travel deeper into the Uncharted Territories, to re-examine my path.
J: You wanna have a mid-life crisis? Fine, just ditch the firm, head off to Maui, shack up with the supermodel, but you do not get to keep the Porshe.
A mid-life crisis is a period of psychological doubt and anxiety that some people (mainly men) experience in middle age often causing them to freak out, get an earring, grow a ponytail, and run off to Hawaii with their secretaries. (part of this definition courtesy of Dictionary.com, the rest was me)

Back on Moya with Crais--
J: Yo Chi, what up?

C: How do I know it's you?
J: You want to check my birthmarks?
Oh, let me do that...

This isn't a Crichtonism, but I just had to mention the scene where D'Argo is sitting playing Rock, Paper, Scissor by himself. I wonder if he won?

John, back to pick up D'Argo and Aeryn--
J: Somebody call for a taxi?

Rygel hyperventilates upon seeing John, D'Argo, and Aeryn alive--
J: You got a frog in your throat? You need a Hynerian heimlich?
Having a frog in one's throat means to be choked up or hoarse. The heimlich maneuver is a life-saving technique used when someone is choking on something stuck in the throat.

Talyn, demanding a captain, fires on Moya--
J: Let's get that boy some guidance before he turns into a full-blow Menendez brother.
The Menendez brothers are famous for the murder of their parents and the subsequent trial which was highly televised.

After an explosion--
J: Man, haven't you people heard of fuses?
A fuse is a small safety part in an electrical device which causes it to stop working if the electric current is too high, and so prevents fires or other dangers. Moya obviously does not have fuses.

P: Talyn says he'll contact Moya from time to time.
J: They say they'll call, Pilot, once a week, but they never do.
Kids today...
